New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS), known as “The Magic Mile,” has played host to some of NASCAR’s most iconic moments. Whether it’s thrilling comebacks or emotional wins, here are five unforgettable moments that still have fans talking:
- Rusty Wallace’s Inaugural Victory (1993)
In the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) race at NHMS on July 11, 1993, Rusty Wallace started in the 33rd position, but that didn’t stop him from dominating the field. Despite being far behind early in the race, Wallace fought hard, leading 106 laps, to secure the win. This victory not only marked his first at NHMS but also solidified him as a force to be reckoned with in the sport. His triumph remains a fan-favorite, a perfect example of perseverance and strategy paying off in a high-stakes environment.
- Jeff Gordon’s First NHMS Win (1995)
On July 9, 1995, Jeff Gordon secured his first-ever victory at NHMS during the Slick 50 300. This win was particularly special because it marked a key moment in Gordon’s rapid rise to stardom. By taking the checkered flag in this race, Gordon set the tone for his future success, ultimately becoming one of the most celebrated drivers in NASCAR history. The win also contributed to his remarkable seven-win season, which was a major factor in his later dominance in the sport. His first victory at NHMS remains a significant milestone in both his career and the track’s history.
- Ernie Irvan’s Emotional Comeback (1996)
In one of NASCAR’s most emotional moments, Ernie Irvan made a triumphant return to the sport on July 14, 1996 after surviving a life-threatening crash. Just under two years earlier, Irvan had suffered a near-fatal accident, but he came back stronger than ever. Winning at NHMS, Irvan led 38 laps and secured the victory in front of an emotional crowd. His win wasn’t just about crossing the finish line – it symbolized an incredible journey of recovery and resilience. Fans and fellow drivers alike hailed the victory as one of the most inspiring in NASCAR history.
- Joey Logano’s Maiden Cup Series Win (2009)
Joey Logano made history at NHMS on June 28, 2009 by becoming the youngest driver to ever win a NCS race. At just 19 years old, Logano stunned the racing world by clinching the victory in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. This win was significant not only for his career but also for the entire NASCAR community, as it showcased the future of the sport. Logano’s victory solidified his potential as a future champion, and it remains a proud moment for his fans, especially as he continued to achieve success in the years following.
- Kevin Harvick Joins Jeff Burton as Winningest Cup Series Drivers at NHMS (2019)
On Sept. 17, 2000, Jeff Burton not only won the Dura Lube 300 sponsored by Kmart, his fourth at NHMS, but with that win came the title of NHMS’s winningest NCS driver, a title previously held by Jeff Gordon since Aug. 30, 1998 with three wins. Burton then held this title alone until July 21, 2019 when Kevin Harvick captured the checkered flag at the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301, securing his fourth career victory at “The Magic Mile.” In a race that featured several lead changes and plenty of close action, it was a last-lap battle between Harvick and Denny Hamlin all the way to the finish line that got the crowd to its feet. The top two fought through lapped traffic after Hamlin made a pass attempt in turns one and two. Harvick stood on the brakes and tried to keep it straight knowing Hamlin was going to roll the dice and take another shot at the win. Ultimately, Harvick went back-to-back at NHMS and added another victory to his impressive resume and to his growing legacy as one of NASCAR’s elite drivers.
These unforgettable moments are just a few of the reasons why NHMS is a must-visit destination for NASCAR fans. Each race at “The Magic Mile” offers a chance to witness history in the making.
