Laconia Motorcycle Week 2019 wrapped up with round three of the Loudon Road Race Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which serves as homecoming weekend for many LRRS riders each year who no longer race the entire season. Nearly 200 riders competed throughout the three days of racing, which is nearly a 28% increase from round one.
The weekend was highlighted by the 96th Annual Loudon Classic, which made its return to Father's Day, and appropriately ended with the Greenwood father/son duo on the expert podium. Dad, Scott, took the win, while his son, Sam, placed third, sandwiching Cole Hall in second. John Beaulieu took the win for the amateurs while Vicente Frontinan and Nick Leighton rounded out the top three.
Loudon Classic weekend has always been the one weekend out of the entire Loudon Road Race Series season that brings riders back to Loudon from New England and beyond to compete in the iconic race. Seven-time Loudon Classic winner and Tyngsboro, Mass. native Shane Narbonne competed in Friday and Saturday's Supermoto event on the half dirt/half pavement track and Saturday's races on NHMS's newest racing surface, The Flat Track, which is a 0.25-mile dirt track, but Sunday's Loudon Classic on the 1.6-mile road course is the real reason he returns each year.
"It's the longest-running motorcycle race in America, and it's pretty cool to still have it running," said Narbonne, who holds the record for being the youngest winner in Loudon Classic history. "I came back this year hoping to go for five in a row, and the weather didn't help me in the greatest way, but I wasn't going to sit on the sidelines for this one. It's the biggest one of the year for me, so I went out, tried my best and I never gave up. All the guys were ripping, and it was fun."
Sunday's win marked Greenwood's fourth Loudon Classic victory, dethroning Narbonne, who was dubbed "The King of the Classic" in 2018 after his fourth consecutive Loudon Classic victory.
Hall, who made his first 2019 LRRS appearance in Sunday's Loudon Classic, finished second after starting 20th and seemed to feel more comfortable than most racing in the rain.
"My team manager, Joel Allen, predicted three weeks ago that it was going to rain today," said Hall. "I do enjoy racing in the rain, so here we are. The Classic has a long history. A 20-lap race is a long race, and a lot can happen."
Hall, a veteran LRRS rider and Stratham, N.H. native, went on to credit his team for helping him pull everything together, get the bikes ready and said he owed his second place finish to them.
Returning to New Hampshire from New Jersey was rider Gene Buonomo, who competed in the two-hour ASRA Team Challenge on Saturday.
"This is a special one for us," said Buonomo. "I met Norman, who is now my teammate, probably three years ago, and we come back every year. These are the closest friends I have right now, and they live in New Hampshire. Coming to Loudon every year is the best for us. It's special."
That special feeling exploded in Saturday's riders meeting when Buonomo's twelve-year-old son, Declan, was honored by all of the LRRS riders when he was presented with a Loudon Classic trophy after some of the riders found out he won two gold medals and a bronze medal in his first Special Olympics appearance last weekend.
"I was just taken aback by the whole thing," said Buonomo, a single father to three sons. "I bring them here, and they're running around having a great time, and for everyone to honor him like that, I couldn't say much, I probably looked like I was going to cry, because that's how I felt. I really loved that whole ceremony."
Round four of the Loudon Road Race Series returns to New Hampshire Motor Speedway July 27-28.
