Lemons take over the 1.6-mile full road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20 for the 24 Hours of Lemons Halloween Hooptiefest, part of which, benefits the New Hampshire Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities (SCCNH).
“This event is so much fun to watch, and the participants really get in to the Halloween spirit,” said Speedway Children’s Charities New Hampshire Chapter Director and New Hampshire Motor Speedway Director of Marketing Danielle Cyr. “Of all the fundraisers we do throughout the year, this one is definitely the most unique. We’re totally okay with a donation to Speedway Children’s Charities and a silly punishment getting the racers out of serving time in the penalty box.”
During the two-day 14-hour endurance race consisting of cars that cost $500 or less, infractions may send teams to the penalty box for a time out. SCCNH will sell passes that require the team to perform a wacky task, such as publicly announcing their remorse for the infraction while strapped to the roof of their car with saran wrap or pulling their keys out of a jar of mayonnaise, in order to get the team out of the humiliating and time-consuming penalty box. The teams, which each consist of at least two drivers plus as many crew members as they want, are encouraged to decorate the lemons and wear costumes to the event.
This year’s event has 120 teams from the United States, Canada and England, including 19 teams from New Hampshire. This year, teams are coming from as far away as Polk County, Florida; Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada and Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. Teams will compete with vehicles of all ages including Team Dumpster Fire’s 1970 Dodge Sweptline, Slippery Slope’s 1991 BMW 535 and FRS The Pumpkin’s 2013 Scion FRS.
24 Hours of Lemons is the world’s first endurance race series for cars that cost $500 or less. With 10,000 participants spread across dozens of races at tracks coast-to-coast, no other event creates bigger, weirder, more hilariously irrational challenges than this weekend-long blowout of bumper-to-bumper competition between cars that are due for the scrapheap.
